About the atelier

A small school built around attention.

Our story

Founded in Portland in 2018, Narrowstep Atelier began as a shared worktable where makers compared wick tests, scent notes, and the quiet satisfaction of a clean pour. The studio grew into a learning space because the most useful craft knowledge was always the knowledge shared openly.

Today we teach online courses and live sessions for people who want a grounded introduction or a more deliberate studio practice.

Our mission

We make candle education clear, responsible, and welcoming. Our mission is to help students understand materials well enough to make thoughtful decisions, record their process, and keep learning beyond one finished candle.

Observe first

We encourage notes, comparisons, and patient testing before changing a formula.

Teach honestly

We distinguish established guidance from personal preference and never promise identical results.

Design lightly

We value useful objects, quiet palettes, and choices that let the material speak.
